Majorca, << muh JAWR kuh, >> also called Mallorca << mah YAWR kuh >> (pop. 912,544), is the largest of the Balearic Islands. The Balearics form a province of Spain. Majorca lies about 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the country’s eastern coast.
Majorca has an area of about 1,400 square miles (3,626 square kilometers). Palma is the only large city. Tourism is the island’s leading economic activity. Its agricultural products include almonds, figs, olives, oranges, and wine. Majorca has limestone and marble quarries and some manufacturing.
