Malacca, << muh LAK uh >>, Strait of, is a channel between the Malay Peninsula and the island of Sumatra. The strait connects the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. It is about 500 miles (800 kilometers) long and from 25 to 100 miles (40 to 160 kilometers) wide. The city of Singapore lies on Singapore Island at the southeastern end of the strait. The strait is an important shipping route.
