Marciano, << `mahr` see AH noh, >> Rocky (1923-1969), was the world heavyweight boxing champion from 1952 to 1956. He retired in 1956 after winning all of his 49 professional fights. Marciano won the title on Sept. 23, 1952, by knocking out Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round in Philadelphia. Eight months later, in his first title defense, Marciano knocked out Walcott in the first round. Marciano then successfully defended his title five more times. Marciano is considered one of the hardest punchers in boxing history. His victories include 43 knockouts, with 11 in the first round. In 1951, he ended the comeback of former world champion Joe Louis by knocking him out in the 8th round.

Marciano was born Rocco Marchegiano in Brockton, Massachusetts, on Sept. 1, 1923. He turned professional in 1947. Marciano died in the crash of a private airplane on Aug. 31, 1969.
