Mark, Saint, sometimes called John Mark, was an early Christian who accompanied Saint Paul on his first missionary journey. The Acts of the Apostles reports that Mark caused a dispute between Paul and Barnabas, another of Paul’s companions. Mark left them to return to Jerusalem, his home. Mark and Barnabas traveled together as missionaries to Crete after the disagreement. Mark may have been related to Barnabas. According to tradition, Mark was the author of the second Gospel. Mark is also said to have been Saint Peter’s “interpreter” in Rome and to have founded the church in Alexandria, Egypt. He is also said to have died a martyr’s death. His feast day is April 25.
