Massachusetts, University of

Massachusetts, University of, also known as UMass, is a state-supported university system. It has campuses in Amherst, Boston, Lowell, and North Dartmouth, and a medical center in Worcester, Massachusetts. The university was chartered in 1863 as Massachusetts Agricultural College. It took the name University of Massachusetts in 1947.

UMass Amherst, the flagship campus, is the system’s largest school. Its sports teams are known as the Minutemen and Minutewomen. UMass Amherst has a number of cooperative programs with Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith colleges. One program allows a student to take courses at any of the other schools if they are not offered at his or her own school. The schools also offer doctor’s degrees jointly in several fields.
