Mauve, << mohv, >> is a delicate pale purple or violet dye. In 1856, W. H. Perkin, an English chemist, discovered that the oxidation of aniline and potassium dichromate produces mauve dye (see Oxidation ). Mauve is a mixture of derivatives of phenazine. It was the first synthetic coloring to be obtained from coal tar chemicals.
