McClure, Samuel Sidney

McClure, Samuel Sidney (1857-1949), was an American editor and publisher. He founded the McClure Syndicate in New York City in 1884. This was one of the first newspaper syndicates. In 1893, he founded McClure’s Magazine, one of the first successful inexpensive magazines. McClure became a leader in muckraking (exposing dishonesty). He was briefly connected with the S. S. McClure Newspaper Corporation, which was formed in 1915 when he bought the New York Mail.

McClure was born on Feb. 17, 1857, in Forcess, Ireland. He died on March 21, 1949. His works include My Autobiography, Obstacles to Peace, and The Achievements of Liberty.
