McEnroe, John

McEnroe, John (1959-…), was an American tennis champion. He was a left-hander noted for his attacking game and quick reflexes. He also became controversial for his frequent conflicts with officials and his bad-tempered outbursts during matches. McEnroe won the U.S. Open singles title in 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1984. He also won the Wimbledon singles championship in 1981, 1983, and 1984. McEnroe was an outstanding doubles player. He won the Wimbledon doubles title five times and the U.S. Open title four times. McEnroe also played on the American team that won the Davis Cup in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1992.

John Patrick McEnroe, Jr., was born on Feb. 16, 1959, in Wiesbaden, Germany, where his father was serving in the U.S. Air Force. McEnroe retired in 1994 and became a television commentator, remaining as outspoken as he was as a player. He came out of retirement in 2006 to play in two doubles tournaments. McEnroe wrote a best-selling autobiography, You Cannot Be Serious (2002).
