Austral, Florence (1894-1968), an Australian dramatic soprano, became internationally famous, both as an opera singer and as a concert artist. She became known for her performances in the operas of the German composer Richard Wagner, especially in the roles of Brunnhilde and Isolde.
Austral was born in Melbourne on April 26, 1894. She studied at the Melbourne University Conservatorium, at the London School of Opera, and in New York City. She made her debut with the British National Opera Company in London, in 1922. She died on May 15, 1968.
