Mexico, National Autonomous University of

Mexico, National Autonomous University of, is the largest university in Mexico. It was founded in 1551, in Mexico City, as the Royal and Pontifical University. The Roman Catholic Church operated the university until the government closed it in 1867. It was reopened in 1910 as the National University of Mexico. The university became autonomous (free of government control) in 1929. A new campus for the university was built during the early 1950’s.
