Microcrystalline wax is widely used in making special types of paper for packaging. Paper treated with microcrystalline waxes is strong enough to replace tin and steel in many types of containers. These waxes are extracted from the residual oils driven off during the process of refining petroleum (see Petroleum (Refining petroleum) ). Microcrystalline waxes were first used during the 1920’s.
