Microtome << MY kruh tohm >> is a device used to cut materials very thin so that they can be seen in cross section under a microscope. It has a holder in which the specimen is clamped, a razor-sharp knife, a guide for the knife, and a turnscrew which regulates the thickness of the slice. See also Microscope; Microtomy.
