Mohammad, Hanif

Mohammad, Hanif (1934-2016), a Pakistan cricketer, was perhaps the best of the four Mohammad brothers who played Test cricket for Pakistan. An opening batsman, he was best known for his immaculate defense, rarely taking risks and earning the nickname Little Master. Mohammad scored 3,915 Test runs at an average of over 40 per innings. He captained Pakistan 11 times.

Mohammad was born on Dec. 21, 1934, in Junagadh, Gujarat, India. He participated in all but two of Pakistan’s first 57 Test matches, played in the years 1952 to 1969. In January 1959, he scored 499 for Karachi against Bahawalpur, a record that stood for over 35 years. His son, Shoaib, also played Test cricket for Pakistan. Mohammad was the first editor of The Cricketer Pakistan magazine, founded in 1972. He died on Aug. 11, 2016.
