Monte Carlo has been a luxurious resort since the middle of the 1800’s. The elaborate Monte Carlo Casino, designed by the French architect Charles Garnier, is the main attraction. Each year, thousands of tourists gamble at Monte Carlo, but it is against the law for citizens of Monaco to do so. The casino also contains a theater where opera and ballet are performed.
