Moose Jaw (pop. 33,665) is a center for service industries and manufacturing in southern Saskatchewan. It lies at the meeting point of Thunder Creek and the Moose Jaw River. Farmers and ranchers of the surrounding area send their products to Moose Jaw’s grain elevators and stockyards. They also rely on the city for many service needs, such as health care. Industries in Moose Jaw include the manufacture of asphalt, chemicals, clothing, and food products. Moose Jaw was chartered in 1884 and became a city in 1903. It has a mayor-council government. Although the origin of the name Moose Jaw is uncertain, it may have come from an Indian name for the spot on which the town is built.
