Morton, Levi Parsons

Morton, Levi Parsons (1824-1920), served as Vice President of the United States from 1889 to 1893 under President Benjamin Harrison. He also was minister to France from 1881 to 1885 and governor of New York in 1895 and 1896. Morton belonged to a conservative group of Republicans called the Stalwarts. His political success started in 1879 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New York.

Morton was born in Shoreham, Vt. He entered the banking business during the Civil War (1861-1865) and became a prominent New York City banker. His company, through its London branch, was the financial agent of the U.S. government from 1873 to 1884.
