Mosby, John Singleton

Mosby, << MOHZ bee, >> John Singleton (1833-1916), was a famous Confederate ranger during the American Civil War (1861-1865). He joined the Confederate cavalry in 1861, and began his independent ranger activities in 1863. His raids on Union bases and camps were so effective that part of north-central Virginia became known as “Mosby’s Confederacy.” After the war, Mosby practiced law and held several public offices. He was born in Powhatan County, Virginia, on Dec. 6, 1833. Mosby died on May 30, 1916.
