Aycock, Charles Brantley (1859-1912), was a leader in developing public education in the South. As the Democratic governor of North Carolina from 1901 to 1905, Aycock argued for the creation of new schools, including the first rural high schools, and new teacher-training facilities. Later educational reformers used his legislation as a model in much of the South.
Aycock was born on Nov. 1, 1859, in Wayne County, North Carolina. He received a law degree from the University of North Carolina in 1880. Aycock died on April 4, 1912, while campaigning for a seat in the U.S. Senate. A statue of Aycock represents North Carolina in the U.S. Capitol.
