Muscle sense, also called conscious proprioception, is one of two senses that tells a person what position parts of the body are in. The other sense is sight. A person walking down the street knows the position of the legs without looking at them. Proprioceptors (nerves) in the joints, muscles, and tendons of the legs are sensitive to pressure and tension. The proprioceptors send information about the state of the joints, muscles, and tendons to the brain. The brain combines the information, enabling the person to sense the position of the body and to influence movement. There are proprioceptors for most parts of the body.
