Naval War College, in Newport, Rhode Island, is the postgraduate educational institution of the United States Navy. The college improves the professional decision-making abilities of senior officers in both command and management positions in the navy. It also conducts research aimed at developing strategies and tactics for use in future naval warfare.
The Naval War College consists of four resident colleges, the Center for Naval Warfare Studies, and the Center for Irregular Warfare and Armed Groups. Some programs train U.S. officers from other branches of the armed forces. The Center for Naval Warfare Studies coordinates research and computerized war games that simulate actual combat conditions. The Center for Irregular Warfare and Armed Groups studies warfare with groups not part of national militaries. Commodore Stephen B. Luce founded the Naval War College in 1884.
