Neem tree is an Asian tree that has many important uses for people. Manufacturers use parts of the neem tree to make pesticides (chemicals used to kill pests). In addition, people have treated diseases with the tree’s leaves, seeds, bark, and roots for centuries.
The neem tree is native to south Asia, but it also grows in other parts of Asia and in Africa, the Caribbean, and Central America. The tree may grow up to 90 feet (27 meters) tall. It produces white, honey-scented flowers and olivelike fruits.
Seeds from the neem tree contain a compound called azadirachtin. People use azadirachtin along with other neem compounds to make pesticides. Such pesticides are environmentally safe and can help control hundreds of pests, including aphids, mites, and locusts. Manufacturers also use neem tree parts in such products as soap, toothpaste, and acne ointment.
People from south Asia have traditionally made a number of natural remedies from the neem tree. For example, they have produced antiseptic paste from the leaves to treat skin diseases and sores.
