Nene, << NAY nay, >> also known as Hawaiian goose, is a rare bird of Hawaii. It also is the official bird of Hawaii. Nenes measure 22 to 27 inches (56 to 69 centimeters) long and are brown with long, buff-colored neck feathers. They live in open country and feed chiefly on grass. The female lays three to six creamy-white eggs. In 1950, only about 50 nenes existed. Since then, the number has greatly increased due to breeding and protection programs.
