Netzahualcóyotl was founded in 1900 but was not incorporated as a city until 1963. Since 1970, Netzahualcóyotl’s population has more than doubled, making it a prime example of Mexico’s booming urbanization. This rapid growth has produced such problems as a shortage of good housing, a lack of basic city services, and pollution. The city’s population is largely working-class. A number of manufacturing plants operate there.
