Nicosia << `nihk` uh SEE uh >> is the capital and largest city of Cyprus , an island republic in the Mediterranean Sea . The municipality of Nicosia has a population of about 250,000. A municipality may include rural areas as well as the urban center. The city serves as the island’s business center and as a trade center in the Mesaoria Plain. Goods produced there include almonds, fruit, olive oil, wheat, and wine.
In 1974, Turkish troops invaded Cyprus. Nicosia then was divided into a Turkish Cypriot section to the north and a Greek Cypriot section to the south. The island’s main government offices are located in the southern section.
