Norton, Andre

Norton, Andre (1912-2005), was an American author of science fiction. She wrote more than 130 books, most of them for young people. Norton often drew on history and folklore for her action-packed plots, which include such elements as magic, time travel, and animals with powers of telepathy.

Norton’s first books were spy stories and historical novels. Her first science-fiction book was Star Man’s Son, 2250 A.D. (1952). Other books include The Beast Master (1959), Operation Time Search (1967), Wraiths of Time (1976), and Dare to Go A-hunting (1990).

Norton wrote numerous books with other authors. For example, she collaborated with Sasha Miller on a fantasy series that includes To the King a Daughter (2000), Knight or Knave (2001), and A Crown Disowned (2002).

Norton was born on Feb. 17, 1912, in Cleveland. From 1932 to 1951, she worked as a children’s librarian there. Norton’s given name was Mary Alice. She changed her name to Andre because of concerns that her first novel, The Prince Commands (1934), would not be accepted if publishers knew its author was a woman. Norton also wrote science fiction under the pen name Andrew North. She died on March 17, 2005.
