Ocher, << OH kuhr, >> also spelled ochre, is a yellow to brownish-red type of earth. It is ground to a powder and used to color inks, paints, and other substances. Heating the yellow variety produces burnt ocher, which has a rich red color. Ocher consists of iron oxide, clay, and sand. The state of Georgia has large ocher deposits.
