Okhotsk << oh KOTSK >>, Sea of, is a large arm of the north Pacific Ocean on the eastern boundary of Russia. The sea is about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) long and 600 miles (970 kilometers) wide, and covers about 615,000 square miles (1,590,000 square kilometers). It is separated from the Bering Sea on the east by the Kamchatka Peninsula. The Kuril Islands on the south separate the sea from the Pacific Ocean. Ice covers the Sea of Okhotsk from November to April, and heavy fogs and storms occur often. But the sea is used as a trade waterway for the Russian ports of Magadan and Okhotsk. The Amur River and smaller streams empty into the Sea of Okhotsk.
