Ottawa, University of

Ottawa, University of, or Université d’Ottawa, is a coeducational school in Ottawa, Canada. It is supported by the province of Ontario. It was operated by the Roman Catholic Oblates of Mary Immaculate until 1965, when control was transferred to an independent board of governors. The university’s administration, instruction, and research are conducted in French and English.

The University of Ottawa was founded as the College of Bytown in 1848. It received a civil charter in 1866 and a papal charter in 1889. In 1965, its faculties of theology and canon law were grouped to form Saint Paul University, which is federated with the University of Ottawa.
