Oxnam, G. Bromley

Oxnam, G. Bromley (1891-1963), was a bishop of the Methodist Church. He served as bishop of the Washington, D.C., area from 1952 to 1960, when he retired. Oxnam’s books and speeches emphasize his liberal social beliefs. They favor justice for laborers and equal rights for all classes.

Garfield Bromley Oxnam was born on Aug. 14, 1891, in Sonora, California. He was ordained a Methodist minister in 1916. He taught at the Boston University of Theology from 1927 to 1928. Oxnam served as president of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, from 1928 to 1936. He was bishop of the Omaha area from 1936 to 1940, of the Boston area from 1940 to 1944, and of the New York area from 1944 to 1952. He died on March 2, 1963.
