Palmetto, << pal MEHT oh, >> is a group of palm trees. Palmettos grow in Bermuda, the Caribbean region, Central America, the southeastern part of the United States, and northern South America. They range in height from 6 to 90 feet (1.8 to 27 meters), depending on the species. Palmettos have fan-shaped leaves, which can be used to make baskets, mats, and thatch for huts. The sabal palmetto is the state tree of Florida and South Carolina.
