Pampas

Pampas, << PAM puhs, >> is a Guarani Indian word that means plain. Geographers use the word pampas to describe the huge grassland region in Argentina that fans out around Buenos Aires and extends into western Uruguay and southern Brazil. An area of fertile soil and grasses, the Argentine Pampas yields abundant crops and supports livestock. It is also the site of most of Argentina’s urban areas. About two-thirds of Argentina’s people live on the Pampas. See also Argentina (The Pampas).
