Patmos, << PAT muhs or PAT mos, >> is a small volcanic island in the Aegean Sea, off Turkey’s west coast. It is one of the Dodecanese Islands. It was on Patmos that the author of the Book of Revelation saw his prophetic visions (see Revelation, Book of ). The island covers 13 square miles (34 square kilometers) and has a population of 3,000. Almost all of the people depend for a living on tourism or the growing of citrus fruit and olives. Patmos was ruled by the Ottoman Empire, which was based in what is now Turkey, from 1537 to 1912, when Italy gained control. It was formally given to Italy by the Treaty of Lausanne, in 1923. It was given to Greece in 1947.
