Pedometer

Pedometer, << pih DOM uh tuhr, >> is a small instrument that measures the distance a person walks. Mechanical pedometers contain small moving parts that are jiggled when a person’s foot impacts the ground. The pedometer records each impact as a step. Electronic pedometers contain sensors that measure acceleration. They translate these measurements into step counts. Pedometers typically work best when worn near the hip, though certain electronic pedometers can be worn around the wrist. Some phones feature built-in pedometers.
