Penobscot River

River, Penobscot << puh NOB skot, >> is the longest waterway in Maine. It rises near the Canadian border and flows eastward through forests. The river forms Chesuncook and Pemadumcook lakes. It then flows south for the rest of its 350 miles (563 kilometers) to empty into Penobscot Bay, on the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean vessels can sail up the river to Bangor, 60 miles (97 kilometers) from the sea. The name Penobscot comes from the Algonquian Indian words for rocky river.
