Pictou << PIHK too >> (pop. 3,107) is a port town in Nova Scotia, Canada. It lies on the south shore of Northumberland Strait, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. Industries in the town include fishing, making steel products, ship repair, shipping, and tourism. Pictou has an elected town council, which includes a mayor. A chief administrative officer is responsible to the council for running town affairs. Pictou is the seat of Pictou County.
Native Mi’kmaq people lived in the area of what is now Pictou before white settlers arrived in the area in 1767. In 1773, a large ship brought nearly 200 settlers from Scotland to Pictou, and they established the town. During the early 1800’s, thousands of Scots came to Nova Scotia through this port.
