Pitch is a black, gluelike substance that is obtained by distilling coal tar. Pitch is highly adhesive and water repellent. It is used for roofing materials, road pavings, and waterproofing applications. Pitch is also used in making the carbon electrodes (electrical poles) for the electrolytic cells that produce aluminum.
