Prince Rupert, British Columbia (pop. 12,300), is the second largest port on Canada’s west coast. Only Vancouver is larger. The city lies on Kaien Island, north of the mouth of the Skeena River. A bridge links the city to the mainland. Fishing, logging, seafood processing, and pulp manufacturing once employed many people in Prince Rupert. Today, the city has major terminals for exporting coal and grain. It also has a world-class container terminal that receives Asian manufactured goods for eastern North American markets. The city has a mayor-council form of government.
