Barnard, Frederick Augustus Porter (1809-1889), was the American educator for whom Barnard College was named. He served as president of the University of Mississippi from 1856 to 1861. He became president of Columbia College of New York City in 1864 and served until his death on April 27, 1889. His efforts to make Columbia coeducational resulted in the founding of Barnard College, which opened six months after he died. Barnard was born on May 5, 1809, in Sheffield, Massachusetts, and graduated from Yale University.
