Rajah, << RAH juh, >> is a title taken from the Sanskrit word rajan, which means king. Ruling princes of native states in India were once the only persons known as rajahs. But under the British Empire the title of rajah was also given to certain other high-ranking Hindus. Native princes who kept some authority under British rule were called maharajah (great king).
