Richards, Viv (1952-…), an Antiguan cricket player, was one of the greatest, most exciting, and highest-scoring batsmen in the history of the sport. He was appointed captain of the West Indies team in 1985. Richards is a powerful right-handed batsman, a useful off-break bowler, and a fine fielder. Richards’s Test career began in 1976. He scored 291 runs off 386 balls in a Test match against England in 1976. His fastest innings was 110 not out, scored off only 56 balls in St. John’s, Antigua, in 1986. Richards scored his 100th first-class century in 1988.
Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards was born on March 7, 1952, at St. John’s, Antigua (now Antigua and Barbuda). He played for the Leeward Islands in 1971 and 1972, and from 1986 to 1989. He played for Somerset, England, between 1974 and 1986. He also played for Queensland, Australia, in 1976 and 1977. Richards played for Glamorgan, Wales, from 1990 to 1993. He retired from Test cricket in 1991 and from first-class cricket in 1994.
Richards wrote an autobiography, Hitting Across the Line (1991). In 1998, the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda granted him a knighthood, and Queen Elizabeth II approved the honorary title.
