Rockefeller, John Davison, Jr.

Rockefeller, John Davison, Jr. (1874-1960), was the son of the wealthy American businessman John D. Rockefeller. He joined his father’s business after graduating from Brown University in 1897. He devoted most of his life to extending the philanthropic (charitable) work his father had started. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., ultimately gave away more than $537 million for medical research, international education, social reform, conservation efforts, and other charitable projects. He donated $81/2 million to buy land for the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. His other major projects included Rockefeller Center in New York City and the restoration of historic Williamsburg, Virginia. Rockefeller was born in Cleveland on Jan. 29, 1874, and died on May 11, 1960.
