Rose, Murray

Rose, Murray (1939-2012), an Australian freestyle swimmer, won six Olympic medals. At the age of 17 at the 1956 Summer Olympic Games, Rose won gold medals in the 400-meter and 1,500-meter races and was a member of the winning 800-meter relay team. He repeated as winner of the 400-meter race at the 1960 Olympics. In 1960, he also won a silver medal in the 1,500-meter race and was a member of the bronze medal-winning 800-meter relay team. Rose set world records at various distances during his career.

Iain Murray Rose was born on Jan. 6, 1939, in Birmingham, England, but moved to Australia with his family at the age of 1. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1962. Rose became known for his ideas about health foods. He chose a diet that omitted familiar foods, such as meat, fish, and poultry, and any food with chemicals added. He substituted offbeat and rare foods, such as seaweed. Rose died on April 15, 2012.
