Rosewood is the name of several kinds of wood used to make knife handles, brush handles, and ornamental furniture. Rosewood is valued for its ability to take a high polish and for its rich color, which ranges from dark reddish-brown to purplish-brown. Its name comes from the roselike odor of the wood when it is sawed. The wood is sometimes called blackwood.
Rosewood comes from trees in the genus Dalbergia. These trees grow in Brazil, Central America, Southern Asia, and Madagascar.
