Ross Dam was built in a narrow gorge of the Skagit River north of Seattle. The arch-type dam was one of the world’s highest in the United States when it was constructed in 1949. It is a unit of the Seattle power system and produces 360,000 kilowatts of power. Ross Dam is 540 feet (165 meters) high and 1,300 feet (396 meters) long. It forms a lake 25 miles (40 kilometers) long, which stores about 1 1/2 million acre-feet (1.9 billion cubic meters) of water.
