Royal Gorge is a canyon of the Arkansas River, extending about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Canon City, Colorado. The gorge is more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) deep. A railroad passes through this remarkable chasm. The canyon is only 30 feet (9 meters) wide at some points. Many bridgelike structures had to be built along the walls of the gorge for the railroad tracks. This roadway provides a water-level route through a mountainous section of the Rockies. One of the highest suspension bridges in the world, 1,053 feet (321 meters) above the water, spans the gorge at the top.
