Battleground National Cemetery

Battleground National Cemetery contains the graves of 41 U.S. Army soldiers who died defending Washington, D.C., in 1864, during the Civil War. The Confederate attack on the capital ended with the Battle of Fort Stevens on July 11 and 12. President Abraham Lincoln, who was at the scene, came under enemy fire for a time. The cemetery is located at 6625 Georgia Avenue NW, in Washington. The U.S. government established the cemetery in 1864.
