Saint Lazarus, Order of, was a Christian religious organization of knights and nurses founded in Jerusalem about 1098. Its official name was the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. The order was established to operate hospitals, especially for lepers; to assist pilgrims; and to spread the Christian faith. In 1253, the order transferred its activities to Europe. It continues today as an organization based in Paris.
