Saone, << sohn, >> River is a waterway in eastern France. It rises near the foothills of the Vosges Mountains and flows for 268 miles (431 kilometers) past the vineyards of Burgundy. The Saone, the most important tributary of the Rhone River, joins it at Lyon. Light ships can sail on it for 232 miles (373 kilometers). The industrial city Chalon-sur-Saone lies on its banks. Canals connect the Saone River to the Moselle, Marne, Yonne, and Loire rivers.
