Beagle

Beagle is a breed of small dog best known for its strong sense of smell. Beagles are sometimes used to hunt rabbits. Most are alert, curious, and friendly. They can be easily trained and are popular companions for children and adults.

This sturdy dog is compact, with a short, thick coat that is black, white, and tan. The beagle has a broad head, big brown eyes, and long, soft ears. Beagles weigh from 18 to 30 pounds (8 to 14 kilograms). In the United States, the beagle is bred in two sizes. Smaller beagles measure less than 13 inches (33 centimeters) tall at the shoulders. Larger beagles measure 13 to 15 inches (33 to 38 centimeters) tall.

The beagle is one of the oldest breeds, originating in ancient Rome. It was developed in its current form in England in the 1600’s.
