Shehan, Lawrence Joseph

Shehan, << SHEE uhn, >> Lawrence Joseph (1898-1984), was an American religious leader. He was named a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1965 by Pope Paul VI. He also received the honorary title of primate of the United States because his Baltimore diocese is the oldest in the country.

Cardinal Shehan was born on March 18, 1898, in Baltimore. He was ordained a priest in 1922 and served at St. Patrick’s Church in Washington, D.C., from 1923 to 1941. He became a bishop in 1945 and was appointed first bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1953. He served as archbishop of Baltimore from 1961 until he resigned in 1974. He died on Aug. 26, 1984.
